‘An Essay in the Picturesque’
The subject of this little chalk drawing appears again as a woodcut in “Breakfast in Perigord”.
It is there described as being at La Roche Guyon, but this is just an example of the approximation which seems to have crept into many of his French place names. The site is really the Church at La Roque Gageac, on the right bank of the River Dordogne some three miles upstream from the more famous Beynac.
