Artwork Description / Detail
This is a delightful study of the artist’s sympathetic handling of the watercolour medium.
Cecilia has appeared in many of Sir Russell Flint’s paintings. He believed that there should be an atmosphere of mutual trust and companionship between the artist and his model. This he found in Cecilia who was patient, enthusiastic and a beautiful subject.
On the 22nd June 1953 a 22 year old model, Cecilia Green came to work for Sir Russell Flint, then aged 73, at his studio Peel Cottage, Notting Hill Gate. He later commented that he had tried to paint her likeness all his life and had adapted faces to make them like hers for years and years before they met.
For the next fifteen years she became his favoured model, her presence spurring him on as he entered the most productive era of his painting. Their relationship was close and she became a trusted confidant and respected critic.
