Mervyn Williams was appointed Artist in Residence at Tylee Cottage in Whanganui in 1988 and was there for a year. He spent many hours on the Whanganui River and in the settlement of Koriniti….and decided to work the “detritus of old structures, fences and implements swept down the Whanganui River during the violent flooding that occurs from time to time”…

When his residency came to an end, he decided to work between Auckland and Whanganui, painting in Auckland and making sculpture in Whanganui. He purchased a disused church, which gave him the ideal space and working area for assembling his wooden sculptures.
