Sir William Russell Flint
This painting is a brilliant study of Cecilia in two directly contrasting poses. The one displays the hauteur of a goddess gazing down from Mt Olympus, arrogantly stripped to the waist. The other is a submissive sewing girl demurely dressed and patiently accomplishing her task. The dramatic quality of this picture is further enhanced by a profusion of colour as a cascade of gowns spill from a simple chair. Attention to detail as in the lacquer sewing box is remarkable.
