Hayman’s paintings drew on his vast knowledge of literature, history, mythology and religion. In this work, a rustic St Francis reaches toward a grinning wolf, evoking the beloved legend of the Catholic mystic poet and friar who tamed a marauding wolf. St Franics appeared in a number of Hayman's paintings including in ‘St Francis with Wolf and Birds’ 1978 purchased by Rodney Wilson for the collection of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū.
