Sir Francis Chichester the famous aviator and yachtsman had a New Zealand connection. He lived and worked at Silverstream selling real estate. He made the first solo East-West flight of the Tasman in "Gypsy Moth" in 1931. In 1966 he made the first solo round the world voyage in his yacht "Gypsy Moth 2" He was knighted by H.M. the Queen in 1967.
