An important 1877 view of the settlement of Picton painted from the shoreline on the Southern side where fishing nets are drying on poles in the left foreground, and a man mending nets is seated in a dinghy at anchor in the right foreground. On Picton’s waterfront a yacht, a sailing ship and a steamship are berthed and in the middle distance a fishing boat sails into the busy port in. This is an interesting historical commentary on steam power starting to take over from sail power. The town of Picton is shown in its early days of development but amongst the buildings on the right is a large two-storeyed building which may be a hotel and two smaller two-storey buildings on the left all indicate the growing wealth and importance of this developing port.
