A descendant of the influential northern leaders Tāmati Wāka Nene and Eru Patuone, she played a role in the New Zealand Wars as a young woman before later becoming a prominent figure within both Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Whātua communities. In her later years, she became one of the most celebrated subjects of Charles F. Goldie, whose portraits immortalised her dignity, strength, and presence, securing her place as one of the most recognisable Māori women in New Zealand art history.3of 3
