Patrick Hayman British, 1915-1988
23 x 23 cm (excluding frame)
Although he never visited the country, Canadian themes appear frequently in Patrick Hayman’s work. For many years, Canadian English professor Peter Millard acted as Hayman’s dealer, importing his paintings to Saskatoon for a Canadian audience captivated by the artist’s depictions of pioneer figures and “new frontier” themes. Here, Hayman depicts a Canadian Mountie, identified by the force’s scarlet coat and Stetson hat. Founded in 1873 as the Royal North-West Mounted Police, the Mounties were heavily involved in Canada’s western expansion.
