Patrick Hayman British, 1915-1988
33 x 52 cm (excluding frame)
In 1940, following a brief period in Nelson, Hayman moved to Wellington to study at Victoria University. Renting a room in an old house overlooking the harbour, he became absorbed by its fjord-like inlets and busy shipping activity, sketching the scene repeatedly. This work is one of just a handful of surviving paintings produced by Hayman while he was living in New Zealand and was taken by the artist to London when he returned to England in 1947.
