Adele Younghusband (1878 – 1969) is a notable figure in New Zealand's cultural history. Born in Te Awamutu, she led a somewhat nomadic life, living in various cities including Whangarei, Auckland, Tauranga, and Hamilton. She played a key role in developing several arts organisations, co-founding the Waikato Society of Arts with Ida Carey in 1934. In the early 1920s, Younghusband ran a photographic business in Whangarei and became known as a portrait photographer. It was in her 40s that she began to seriously pursue painting, studying the art form in Australia. She went on to become a highly accomplished painter, with her work featured in many major New Zealand collections.
