Christopher Perkins was one of a number of artists who came to New Zealand in the 1920s under the La Trobe scheme to teach in the art departments of the technical colleges throughout the country. He arrived in Wellington in 1929 accompanied by his wife and three children. The scheme provided the appointees and their families with a one-way fare, but Perkins only stayed until 1933 before returning to England.
