Philippe Jacques Linder was born in 1835 at Sarrelouis in France. He studied at the atelier of the renowned historical and genre painter Charles Gleyre, who encouraged him towards a career as a genre painter.
Linder first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1857 and over the next 30 years continued to exhibit many watercolours of the French style ‘à la mode’ – the portraiture of fashionable Parisian society ladies of the turn of the century.
The Museum of Pontoise has his watercolour Jeune Femme Gantée and the Museum at Haarlen has another delightful portrait entitled Rêverie.
