Overview

For many collectors, Eion Stevens remains one of New Zealand's most distinctive and instantly recognisable painters. Combining bold colour, simplified forms and a uniquely playful visual language, Stevens created works that are at once accessible, intelligent and endlessly open to interpretation. His paintings invite viewers into a conversation, offering clues and narratives without ever fully revealing their meaning.  Each painting functions as an open door—inviting curiosity, reflection and personal discovery.

Jonathan Grant Gallery is pleased to present Open Door, a special exhibition drawn from the artist's estate. The exhibition brings together a carefully selected group of paintings that showcase Stevens' wit, imagination and remarkable ability to transform ordinary objects and symbols into visual poetry. Whether depicting boats, ladders, figures or fragments of landscape, each work possesses a sense of mystery, humour and storytelling that is unmistakably his own.

Eion Stevens entrusted four close friends with the stewardship of his estate, authorising the release of no more than twenty-five paintings each year. In accordance with his wishes, the trustees nominate a different charitable beneficiary annually. The net proceeds from this exhibition will support Auckland City Mission.
